Behind the Image

by Ana-Maria Pavalache

The cobalt blue Tsarap River roars through the crumbling mountains and dusty plains. A hanging rickety wooden structure, known as Phuktal Bridge is currently the only connection between the two banks of the Zanskar River, following the heavy landslides and floods from 2015, which washed away all the other bridges. It is therefore, the only medium for the monks of Phuktal Gompa to access food supplies. The bridge and the trekking path leading to it are maintained by the monks and the locals of Cha, the nearest village.
