Behind the Image

by Ana-Maria Pavalache

Tucked in a high-altitude, cold, and arid region of the northwest Himalayas, the Drang-Drung is a massive ice glacier almost 15 miles long. Its runoff contributes as a major source of the Zanskar River, a tributary of the mighty Indus, which plays a crucial role in sustaining the area’s economy and energy supply. Around the world, most glaciers, with a few exceptions in the Karakorum, are showing signs of rapid retreat due to climate change. The scientific community is concerned that global warming and retreating ice will swell glacial lakes and increase the risk of floods downstream.
