Behind the Image

by Konrad Bartelski

One summer I joined the British ski team for a few days to observe their training preparations on the glaciers above Zermatt, where the iconic Matterhorn beams out from virtually every direction and an effigy of the triangular peak adorns every souvenir shop there. Yet while returning from watching the long hours of hard work on the icy training courses I noticed the line of climbers hiking up the wondrous Breithorn.

The scale of the overhanging, glaciated cornice stood out. The peak might not have shared the famed jagged contours of its neighbour, yet those who gave this peak its name must have registered the commodious impression of the dramatic collection of wind-swept snow.
