Behind the Image

by Ana-Maria Pavalache

The air is chilly and very thin above 4500 metres. The traditional robe of the nomad is framed by the multi-shades of blues and crystal waters of lake TsoMoriri which light up the surrounding mountains giving this place a surreal and breath-taking feel. However, in reality, the area is harsh and difficult to survive especially in winters with temperatures falling to -35°C. The people who made this land their home, the Changpas, have adapted to natural elements and eked out an existence for centuries as migratory shepherds on the Changthang plateau of Ladakh, a couple of miles away from the border with Tibet.
