Behind the Image

by Ana-Maria Pavalache

Deep in the isolated Lungnak Valley in Ladakh lies Phuktal Monastery, an abode of peace, where the dazzling red and flowing robes of the young monks distract from the harsh physical existence. Some 2500 years ago, the monastery was just a cave in the mountains. Monks, scholars and anyone seeking enlightenment lived and meditated in this cave in complete isolation, for years at a stretch. That’s how Phuktal Buddhist Monastery, got its name; Phuk meaning cave and Tal meaning liberation.
