Behind the Image

by Ana-Maria Pavalache

The derelict crumbling refuge stands abandoned by the sapphire blue Tso Moriri Lake flanked by lofty mountains stretching far into the distance. Located in the remote and picturesque Rupshu Valley, part of Changthang region of Ladakh, Tso Moriri Lake and surrounding area are part of the designated Ramsar site, Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. Apart from being one of the most beautiful, serene and sacred high altitude lakes at 4,522 m (14,836 ft), it attracts a range of wildlife, including migratory birds, marmots and rare Tibetan wolves, creating an ecosystem that protects unique floral and faunal species.
